Please note that my review is for the XS100, not the XS100i which has WiFi. For some reason the seller has put my review of the XS100 under both the XS100 and the XS110i product which is confusing to people.

---

The Polaroid XS100 impressed me in many ways with its image quality and usability. My video review will cover most everything but I'll highlight a few things here.

I also own the GoPro Hero3 Black. Although the video quality of the Polaroid isn't quite as good as the GoPro, it's pretty darn good especially when you take the price into consideration. In fact, unless you were able to directly compare the GoPro video to the Polaroid video in a direct A-B comparison, as I was able to do, you'd think the Polaroid quality was excellent... and it is very good indeed, just the colors are a bit off (I've included still photo from the Polaroid and one from my GoPro to illustrate the color issue at the end of my video review) and overall image sharpness is not quite as good as the GoPro. The GoPro has higher resolution video options but when you compare similar resolutions between the GoPro and the Polaroid SX100, the Polaroid definitely holds its own. And in fact, the Polaroid seems to have superior low-light performance. And the Polaroid has image stabilization that the GoPro lacks. That can make a very significant difference in the viewing experience having image stabilization.

Here are some of the specs:

1200 mAh built-in battery giving just over 2 hours of recording time.

170 degree wide angle lens

Video resolutions - 1080p, 960p, 720p 30fps/60fps

Still image resolutions - 16MB, 5MB, 3MB, VGA

Still image has 10x burst mode or singe shot mode

Time Lapse: one frame each 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds

I've used the time lapse mode to get some awesome sky/cloud videos. You have to set this mode via the software interface when connected to your computer.

Other than changing between HD and FHD video mode, you must make all other changes via a software interface when the camera is connected to your computer. Obviously this could pose challenges if you're in the woods mountain biking and don't have access to a computer. The GoPro on the other hand lets you change all settings from the camera directly because it has a LCD screen which the Polaroid lacks.

I'm not thrilled with the software that accompanies the Polaroid. PC software (polaroid.exe) installs itself from the camera to your memory card but Mac users will have to visit the Polaroid website to download the application and then add the application to their memory card. The software interface is the same for both MAC and PC and my video will walk you through the various settings available to you. It's a very basic and clunky kind of interface but it gets the job done I guess.

Another feature the camera has is that when connected to an HDTV with the provided HDMI cable, a menu automatically pops up on the screen and you can preview, playback, and delete files or format the MicroSD card through your TV screen. I found this very difficult to use however and it's so flakey I rarely use it. But if you can figure it out, it does come in handy at times.

Polaroid has included a decent, although somewhat flimsy set of mounts for attaching the camera to your handlebar and helmet.

What's very cool is that the camera creates dual-files when recording. One of the files is a much lower resolution "thumbnail" file and that's pretty handy if you want to send smaller file versions of your exploits via email or for quick web uploads.

A feature that the Polaroid has that even the GoPro does not have is a G-sensor. This auto-rotates the image so if you need to mount the camera "upside-down" the image is automatically oriented correctly without having to go into the software prior to shooting to change it. This is something the GoPro does not do and I can't tell you how many times I've viewed video from my GoPro only to discover that it's upside down or sideways. This is not an issue with the Polaroid XS100.

You can turn off the auto-rotation for those situations where it would not be desirable to have the camera auto-rotate the image.

Please note that some others have incorrectly described how the auto-rotation works. To clarify: the auto rotation only corrects itself for the initial orientation of the camera when it is first turned on. Changing the orientation of the camera after recording has begun DOES NOT cause the camera to correct the orientation. It's also important to know that the reduced resolution file that the camera creates in addition to the full resolution file, is NOT auto-rotated, ever.

The anti-vibration feature of the camera is outstanding and extremely effective. GoPro does not have anti-vibration at all and it really helps as my video shows. It smooths out bumpy roads that otherwise would show up in the video as jitters.

The camera is waterproof up to 30 feet with no additional housing needed. Cool. As anyone who has used a GoPro knows, once your GoPro is in the waterproof housing, the audio recording is basically worthless. The Polaroid doesn't need an additional housing and audio recording quality is much better because of that.

The camera has some haptic feedback and vibrates to let you know that it has begun or stopped recording and there is a small LED indicating same.

The camera build quality is OK but does not necessarily give you the impression of being 100% bullet-proof. Of particular concern is the plastic threads for the tripod/mounts. These could easily strip if accidentally cross-threaded or overtightened. The back cover that is removed to gain access to the USB, HDMI ports, microSD card slot and HD/FHD switch is a little flimsy feeling and not that easy to open and close. Fortunately you don't need to open or close it very often.

You can put up to a 32GB memory card in the camera... it will not support more than that. Although the user guide suggest at least Class 6, I'd suggest you get Class 10 for optimal read/write speeds. At the rate of 4GB per half-hour, a 32GB card will record full high definition (FHD) video for approximately 4-hours (1080p@30 fps or 720p@60 fps)

PROS:

-Great quality HD video

-Excellent anti-vibration

-Pretty good audio quality

-Extended recording time of up to slightly over 2 hours on a single charge

-An excellent set of features some of which aren't even on a GoPro Hero 3 Black

CONS:

-no ability to swap batteries since the battery is built-in.

-tripod mount has plastic threads which could strip easily if overtightened or cross-threaded

-the dome covering the lens can cause halos around the video in certain lighting situations.

-some of the included mounting parts don't seem very durable

-very clunky interface when connecting camera to HDTV

-you cannot change most camera settings unless connected to your computer

Overall the XS100 is a LOT of fun to use and captures fantastic video and still shots. The price is right and you get a lot of camera for the money.

I was provided a sample for review.

Very easy to install and fit perfectly. The only complaint I have is that when I was looking for the right filter, and was reading all the questions and answers, the site that I purchased this from was asked, "is this made in America" to which they response was "yes". When it arrived I looked on the box for the "Made in America" logo and it was not there. I then sent a message to the site and asked "Where was this made?" and my response back was "Mexico". I am disappointed ... I am trying to purchase items (within reason of course) that are Made in America, I feel like I was misled and that does not make me happy. I will be looking for a source that has its product MADE IN AMERICA!!

My buddy works for these guys and i got to see this one weekend. This changes the whole "action" based camera scene. At a measly $129, you really can capture a lot of great video at great specs. Obvious draw backs, Internal battery (cannot remove so you will have to do with about 1.5hrs of video at a time before plugging in), no remote capabilities even though the go pro remote is grossly overpriced, around $80. I originally found it annoying not having a remote to trigger the camera. but with the different shutter speeds you really don't mind.

But if you want the interchangeable batteries for longer usage while out, and having a remote. Get the go pro 3 silver or white edition. white edition is only $199, so for $70 more you can start to alleviate some of these pains.

I think this camera is great for back ups for professionals or for concert go-ers on a budget looking to capture great video and pictures at a low price from a renowned company. Or hey, were going on vacation and want a cool camera to take under water or on a hike. here you go. I have a dog so i wouldn't mind getting one to put on him, and this fits the bill.

With this new line up, go-pro will own the market indefinitely.

Fujifilm Instax Mini Rainbow Instant Film is like a box of chocolates in that you are never sure what you are going to get. (Yes, I stole that from a movie.) Many people seem to find this to be desirable. But, for me and mine, it was a bit of a turn off. Rainbow gradient, a good thing. All purple or pink, not so hot.

Anyway, I will still rate it with five stars. It does pretty much what it says it will do and the images are terrific. But, I will be sticking to the usual standard white prints from now on, and save a little money too boot.

Egg Minder Wink App-Enabled Smart Egg Tray

Egg Minder Wink App-Enabled Smart Egg Tray

Quirky and GE comes the Wink Egg Minder Smart Egg Tray that adds a new level of intelligence to your everyday lives and the kitchen. The Egg Minder features a built-in Wi-Fi chip to allow it to sync up to your smart device via the Wink app. Once paired with your smartphone or tablet you can now open the app from anywhere to view how many eggs you have which can be incredibly handy on impromptu grocery shopping trips or if you simply just don't think to check on your egg count before heading out the door. This alone is very convenient but the Egg Minder can still do more. In the actual egg crate next to each egg is an LED light that will alert you to which egg of the bunch is the oldest and should be used next and when that egg is removed from the Egg Minder the next oldest will be indicated and so on. The Egg Minder will also communicate with you through various push-notifications to alert you to when an egg has gone bad, an egg is close to going bad, and even set the Egg Minder to notify you when you are running low on eggs. The Wink app will allow you to choose at what amount of eggs left you want to be notified since a family of five is more likely to run out of eggs quicker than someone living on their own. Up to 14 eggs can be stored in the Egg Minder at one time and to keep the eggs safe while in your refrigerator it also comes with a protective covering. It is powered by two AA batteries (included) and is compatible iOS 6 and above, iPhone 4 and above, and Android OS 2.2 and higher

  • It syncs with your smartphone to tell you how many eggs you've got at home (up to 14) and when they're going bad.

  • irelessly connects to your mobile device to track the number of eggs you have and tell you when they're going bad

  • In-tray LED lights indicate the oldest egg, while push notifications alert you when you're running low.

  • heck Egg Minder while at the store; you'll never be in a scramble for a good egg again.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

Ever been out on a brisk walk trying to work out the stress from the day and then suddenly been hit with a wave of anxiety wondering just how many eggs are in the fridge and what condition they might possibly be in? Well, with the egg minder those panic attacks are for ever behind us. This product works anywhere too, so we can check on our eggs from the John, or the back of a police car, or even from in the emergency room, because those warning signs to turn off all cell phones are just stupid.

The Eggminder will set all of our hearts and minds at ease. Our dreams of a more peaceful world are at hand.

Thank you Eggminder. Thank you.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Film Camera (Blue)

Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Film Camera (Blue)

CUSTOMER REVIEW

I looked for a reliable, classy-looking Polaroid camera as a wedding reception guest book. After thorough research, I determined Instax was cheaper and just as reliable, if not more, than the new Polaroid instant cameras. Both cameras function similarly and use the same film; yet Instax has better reviews and is cheaper. The 8S has a few extra bells and whistles: a clip-on lens for close-up pictures, light/dark and indoor/outdoor settings, the mirror on the front of the camera, and two shutter buttons for either landscape or portrait photographs. Also, the lithium batteries are not hard to find for sale online; I haven't had to replace ours yet, but we know that availability and price would afford on inconvenience.

I have loved it; it was perfect for the party and I still use it frequently. The film is fairly inexpensive, so we continue to use it. The pictures are the size of a credit card with white borders, and the camera comfortably fits in a small purse. On our honeymoon, the good quality allowed us to take pictures of us in front of landmarks and beautiful areas. Also, a little mirror resides on the front of the camera to facilitate quick self-portraits, which can be taped later into journals as keepsakes. Learning which lighting settings work best in certain conditions took some trial and error, but every picture turned out vintage-y and fun, so no film was wasted.

One last word on durability: I didn't have the wrist strap around my arm and accidentally dropped the camera on a ceramic-tiled floor. The film flew out of the back of the camera, but nothing broke off or dented. The camera still looks great and functions optimally, and I only lost the top film, the rest of the cartridge still printed great pictures. That was a while ago, and I haven't had any problems at all!

CUSTOMER REVIEW

I just purchased the Hero 3+ Black Edition one month ago. When the Hero 4 came out I had to try it and I ended up returning my Hero 3+. Why did I get the Hero 4 Silver over the Hero 4 Black and the Hero 3+ Black?

Three Reasons:

1. The Hero 4 Black is $499 and does not come with an LCD (because of heat issues from 4k they could not put on an LCD).

So really if you bought an LCD BacPac for the Black edition, it would cost you a total of $579 compared to the $399 of the Silver. This is a $180 difference!

2. The two models BOTH have improved sharpness compared to the Hero3+ Black.

This video compares the sharpness of the Hero3+ Black, to the Hero4 Silver, and the Hero4 Black:

http://ift.tt/101tocT

Watch this video to compare the Hero4 Black to the Hero3+ Black:

http://ift.tt/1qmKBn7

Then watch this video to compare the Hero4 Black to the Hero4 Silver:

http://ift.tt/1ptz6Lb

As you can see the sharpness between the Hero 4 Black and the Silver is the SAME. They both have the same upgraded sensor/lens and it's definitely improved over the 3+ Black. Yes, the 4 Black can do 4k at 30 FPS, 2.7k48, and 1080p120 while the 4 Silver can only do 2.7k at 30 FPS, 1080p60 (it can do 4k 15 FPS but that is not really usable for most purposes). But to be honest, that is the only improvement and it is a $180 difference! At this moment I cannot justify 4k for that much of an additional increase. I am happy with what the 4 Silver offers AND I get an LCD which is extremely convenient.

3. Compare the battery life of the Hero 4 Black vs the Hero 4 Silver here:

http://ift.tt/1CdpBpz

At 2.7k 30 FPS, the Black only lasts 1 hour and 10 minutes while the Silver lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes!! This is the SAME resolution. Why? Because the Black has a more powerful processor to handle the 4k, and this causes it to eat up more battery regardless of the frame rate.

Given these three reasons, I do not believe the Hero 4 Black is worth the cost. But the Hero 4 Silver is definitely a bargain and worthy of an upgrade from the 3+ Black edition. Don't forget in addition to the cost, the Hero 4 Silver has identical specs as the Hero 4 Black (except for 4k 30 FPS). This means you will also get (compared to the 3+ Black):

- Upgraded sensor with better ability to resolve detail

- 2x the WiFi Speed (less lag and faster transfer speeds)

- 2x the Dynamic Range for Audio Quality - watch this video comparing! http://ift.tt/1tUE2hL

- Bluetooth Capability

- Night Photo Mode (and ability to control shutter speed)

- Night Time Lapse Mode (and ability to control shutter speed)

- Protune for Photos

- Auto white balance in Protune (enables higher bitrate while allowing for zero editing in post)

- LCD TouchScreen (Silver only)

All of these are the same upgrades on the Hero 4, so really you're trading $180 and the LCD screen on the Silver for 4k 30 FPS and decreased battery life on the Black edition. Each person may have their own opinion but I think this is a big problem for most users because the cost does not justify the upgrade.

I haven't had too much of a chance to test it out, but quick photos and videos showed it truly is sharper than the Hero 3+ Black edition. And given the video links I posted above, it is the same sharpness as the Hero 4 Black (unless you shoot in 4k of course). The touch screen is a GREAT addition and very responsive. It works like I would want it to so I am happy with that.

Battery Life with LCD

I also recently tested out the battery life with the LCD screen always on. The Hero 4 Silver comes with an auto-off of 1 minute and can be set at either 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, or always on. The LCD brightness can also be set at high, medium, and low. My first test was with the LCD always on, brightness set to high, recording 2.7k 30 FPS. I was able to get 1 hour and 40 minutes out of the battery! That is pretty amazing as I did not expect that with the high brightness setting. I then did a test with the LCD off with the same frame rate and got 1 hour and 45 minutes (I did this 3 times with the same result).

This means the LCD draws very little power (which is really really great)! For scuba diving, you will need the screen always on as you cannot activate it again once it turns off under water (unless you stop recording and record again but that can be annoying) and knowing it doesn't affect the battery significantly is a great plus. I also tested the Hero 3+ Black in 2.7k 30 and got 1 hour and 38 minutes so the battery life between the two cameras really is the same; even though the Hero4 is 20 mAH less it seems to give more battery life (1180 mAH in the Hero 3+ while 1160 in the Hero 4).

Battery BacPac

For those curious I also tested the new Battery BacPac (claims 15% increased battery life) and compared it to the older Hero 3+ Battery BacPac. I used the Hero 4 Silver and recorded at 2.7k 30 FPS with LCD off. I got 2 hours and 57 minutes with new Battery BacPac compared with 2 hours and 27 minutes with the older Battery BacPac! So improvement of about 30 minutes is not bad at all! This is more than 15% (it was 35% with my test)! GoPro claims the Hero 4 Silver should get 3 hours with the Battery BacPac with 2.7k 30 FPS so I definitely would consider that result accurate.

Conclusion

Overall a great improvement and the recent firmware update released on the 14th of October has fixed all the minor bugs that were out there. I would highly recommend getting this especially if you are upgrading from an older model like the Hero 2 and Hero 3. If you have the money it is worth the upgrade from the Hero 3+ especially for the LCD, the improved sharpness, night time lapse modes, and audio improvements. I think the double wifi speed and bluetooth connectivity are bonuses but I wouldn't upgrade just for those reasons alone but if you combine all the other benefits it's definitely worth the upgrade!

Dropcam Pro Wi-Fi Wireless Video Monitoring Camera

Dropcam Pro Wi-Fi Wireless Video Monitoring Camera

CUSTOMER REVIEW

Ill try and be as simple as possible to help you make a informed decision when you consider buying the Dropcam Pro.

Pros:

(Quality) Its very modern, sleek, the materials its made out of are premium.

(Setup) Very Simple - Just plug it into your computer then into a outlet and connect to WiFi and thats it.

(Video) Very clear video both on your computer and iOS app in normal zoom mode

(iOS 7 App) Great App. I get notifications all the time that the camera picks up (dogs barking) it even picks up birds outside.

(Audio Feature) The audio talk back feature only works when NOT in the night vision mode. I have been in touch with tech support to the point they replaced the camera and the new one has the same issue. Talk-back works great in daylight.

Cons:

(Streaming) I have Verizon FiOS 50Mpbs/30Mbps Wireless and there is a slight streaming delay with both video and talk back feature on LTE and WiFi.

(Night Vision) Video Streams good when in night vision mode on both my computer and iOS app and the video is very clear. However the talk back feature while in night vision mode on the computer and iOS app does not work period. I could open the iOS app and say something and it would come across the camera so distorted you can't even understand it, and it will continue to come through the camera in bits and pieces even after i close the app, then the camera usually disconnects from the WiFi connection so I don't use that feature anymore ( i have worked with tech support for days and they did replace the camera but the new one is having the same issue).

(Zoom) the zoom feature for me isn't useful. I zoom and the image is blurry to me, but when its not in zoom its very clear

(Storage) You can't save video on your phone or computer its only saved "in the cloud" on Dropcams web database and you have to pay for it.

Honestly, who really knows whether your refrigerator air filter is working the way it's supposed to? I personally don't. And I don't think you do either. But we all feel better knowing that we have a fresh filter installed to do whatever it's supposed to be doing in there.
