Danby DAR195BL 1.8 cu.ft. All Refrigerator - Black

Danby DAR195BL 1.8 cu.ft. All Refrigerator - Black

CUSTOMER REVIEW

I wanted a refrigerator that would get really cold, was black and had more room than one with a freezer which I knew I would rarely use. So, based on the good reviews I purchased this Danby DAR195BL 1.8 cu.ft. All Refrigerator - Black.

This compact fridge is very nice. I wanted to mostly use it for drinks, and some lunch stuff/snacks and quick meal items like a carton of eggs, salad dressings and cheeses/luncheon meats; maybe a loaf of bread. They went in with room to spare. The slots for soda/beer cans and my once a day 9.5 oz. bottles of iced Starbuck's Frappucino are nice, everything slid in perfectly. Plus it fits a 2-liter bottle of soda in the door or a quart of milk and a quart of orange juice. Nice 11" depth on the top 2 shelves but items can overhang by another 2", so ideal for leftovers or take-out. Only the bottom shelf is shorter, about 6.5" deep. But so far great! And when you get the temperature dial just right and figure out where to put the soda cans so they get a bit of a freeze on them, you get a heavenly cold drink on a hot day.

Although you can't tell from the pictures, the top of the fridge is not just a shiny flat metal top but instead is a scratch resistant work top that overhangs the door and has a slight depression to it. This means that if you open a can of soda and accidently knock it over the liquid won't run down the sides or into the door crevices but stays on top where you can clean it up easily.

At first I wasn't sure I would be happy with those 6 can slots in the door but soon realized that other things would fit in them too. Right now I have a package of Vienna hot dogs and an onion in the top 2, but often I use these for fresh fruit or yogurt cartons. Just make sure to keep things like fruit at the top if you have the fridge temperature set low or they may freeze.

The AC plug is a "flat to the wall" type so the cord(measuring 6 feet 3 inches) runs against the wall instead of sticking straight out. This means you can push the fridge quite close to a wall. This is a small feature but one I like a lot.

The outside dimensions are approximately 20" high x 17.5" wide x 19.5" deep. The fridge has a drip pan which is about 1.25" high and doesn't rest on the floor but is securely screwed into the back of the unit about 6 inches off the ground. My unit has never leaked any water, the drip pan is always dry when I check it.

No matter where you buy the fridge it comes only in factory packaging which is not very protective. However, neither this unit (nor the replacement I ended up needing) was dented when I received it.

(*** ---> If you don't want to read about all my woes with getting a bad unit, skip down to the UPDATE section ***)

So, that's where the good part ended. It was supposed to be quiet according to most reviews. So I waited a few hours before firing it up (as was recommended) then plugged it in. To my dismay, when the compressor came on it was pretty loud. But I shrugged and just thought it needed about 24 hours to cool itself down and figured it would adjust itself. Well, that didn't happen. It sounds like a mini airplane running it's engine all night long in my bedroom(I've got it set about mid way on the dial). I can even hear it in the living room, over the sound of the television. It makes a constant humming sound at a pitch that just can't be ignored. And we have moved it to different locations/positions too, to try to get it to make less noise but to no avail. The left side also gets VERY hot while the compressor is running.

I love everything about this little fridge but the noise is driving me crazy. I've turned down the dial to a less cool setting to keep the compressor from coming on as often, but now my drinks aren't nearly as cool and refreshing. It's kind of ironic though, because I read a comment about the Emerson 1.8 Cu. Ft Compact Refrigerator (not currently available on Amazon but sold by Target) which is also supposed to be very quiet. That person said his fridge sounded like an "airplane overhead". So I'm thinking this is a quality control issue with these type of fridges or possibly cheap Chinese compressors. Maybe it's just the luck of the draw if you get a quiet or noisy one.

At any rate, I'm thinking maybe I got a defective one, because no one has complained of noise like this. I plan to call Amazon and get a replacement. I'm just hoping that I WILL actually get a quiet one. I really don't mean to discourage anyone from purchasing this unit, because I REALLY like it. But I did feel I should point out how noisy mine is, because maybe they're not making them as good as they used to or maybe they are now being manufactured by another company. Don't really know, just very, very disappointed.

UPDATE 4/3/12: Noise Problem Resolved: Contacted Amazon and asked for a replacement fridge which is great. It's VERY quiet and is warm, not hot, on the sides when the compressor is running. Did have a wobble but was an easy fix. With the dial set to 3/4 my coffee drinks are freezing cold at the bottom level in the door and the back of lower shelf. Need to do a bit more fiddling with the dial, or not. I'm definitely keeping this one!

UPDATE 5/12/12: Fridge still running great and I still love it. Holds so much stuff.

UPDATE 6/14/12: The back of the middle shelf is the coldest shelf in the fridge as it sits directly in front of the cooling element. With the temperature dial set at a little past the 3/4 mark, food can freeze on the middle shelf. Once you're past the 3/4 mark on the dial the areas with the greatest freeze potential are anything closest to the back of the middle shelf with the exception of the top shelf. The top shelf is the warmer of the 3 shelves; hot air rises physics I guess. Fridge working good and I'm still amazed at how much stuff it holds.

UPDATE 8/7/12: As I know that people look for compact dorm fridges to send their kids off to college with I will just mention that this item is also sold by Home Depot but may not be available online. $109 is a good price if you can get it for this fridge. That's about as low as it ever goes, except for one day in June, 2012 went it hit $101 on Amazon.

UPDATE 8/7/13: I've had this fridge a year and a half now and am still very happy with it.

Just to update you on the alternate Emerson 1.8 Cu. Ft Compact Refrigerator which I bought at Target at the same time, it also is still running well and is quiet. But, the fridge door was left slightly open once and the entire freezer compartment turned into a brick of ice. In the process of removing the ice the freezer door hinge broke off and can't be put back on. Also, the thin wire retaining bracket that hold things in the lower door section is too flexible and we often have problems with bottles or jars slipping under them and out onto the floor. I think it's a decent fridge as it is also quiet, plus it can often be found on sale for about $60, but it doesn't hold nearly as much despite being the same size because the freezer compartment takes up too much space. It keeps things cold enough but will not ice my beverages like the Danby does.

To those that have read that the Danby makes noise I do not believe that this is specific to this manufacturer and I advice those buying any compact fridge to make sure you know the return period(30 days with Amazon), set it up and test it DURING THIS PERIOD, and to NOT settle for one that seems too noisy for you. If it's noisy it's defective, simple as that. Let them pick it up and send you another one or two until THEY get it right or you just don't want to deal with it anymore. Best of luck!

UPDATE January 2014: The price on these units is usually at least $109, since December, 2013 they have dropped to about $96 (likely only a seasonal drop)

UPDATE 4/1/14: I've had my fridge two years now(the replacement unit) and it is still working well. It's still quiet, keeps things very cold, and hasn't developed any new problems. Very satisfied.

GE MWF SmartWater Compatible Water Filter Cartridge - Refrigerator

GE MWF SmartWater Compatible Water Filter Cartridge - Refrigerator

CUSTOMER REVIEW

Have an old GE refrigerator that had a GE GWF filter in it. Purchased this filter since it had the same NSF ratings as the GE replacement filter but costs significantly less money. Installation was simple and took less than a minute. Fit was fine and there were no leaks. Flushed the filter as instructed and immediately noticed water flow was much stronger than with the old filter. Water tastes fine and there is no noticeable difference from the genuine GE filter. I am very satisfied with this product.

Sony AS30V High Definition POV Action Video Camera HDR-AS30V

Sony AS30V High Definition POV Action Video Camera HDR-AS30V

CUSTOMER REVIEW

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) This camera is so close to being the best in the industry but it's got some serious missed features to make it great.

Lets start with the GOOD:

Image Stabilization: It's the only sports camera on the market that has image stabilization, this is outstanding!!!

Small form Factor: the camera itself is really small compared to other cameras (but*** keep reading)

simple menus for easy adjustment from the side of camera with it's included screen and buttons on the side.

remote management: you can change settings remotely over WiFi but the options are limited.

Now to the BAD:

The lens is not rotatable: Contour(no longer in busines) and Drift (best on the market, IMO) really hit the features when they made the camera rotatable.

No mount on the camera: the camera has no way to mount it so no matter what you have to use a housing of some kind, utter FAIL

WiFi: Sucks power like crazy... Also limited ability to change setting for the camera. You can only change camera recording rates and angle of view. other settings like time lapse cant be adjusted and setting like flip have to be done from the side of camera. This is quite the pain when all the settings should be adjustable from the app.

Not able to select center point metering or change any metering setting at all, though the stock setting is pretty decent it would be nice to be able to make adjustments.

Microphone settings not adjustable.

Lousy location for mic, not accessible inside the case that it comes with (you can't drill through either because then you'll damage the locking lever that closes the case. You have to buy a goofy offset housing that then gives you access to the ports on the bottom of the camera. Even the optional screen case doesn't allow access to the microphone port... It really should be offset on the back of the camera like the Drift cameras did.

HEAT: This camera gets ridiculously HOT after only running for a short time, say 30 minutes. It seems rather clear to me that they are running the internals at either an over clocking level or have just not provided the proper heat sinking that should be had in a device like this. It seems very odd that other devices like the Ghost camera can run so much cooler and performs nearly the same. Though I might have to say this has a bit better night time visibility but the heat production of this camera is just astounding. Depending on the conditions the camera will actually shut down and stop recording because it has gotten so hot. I have worked with a number of other sports/action cameras and none have gotten as hot as this one. I used it indoors during Christmas morning with the family mounted with a couple rubber bands to a bracket on the wall for a light and after an hour it shut off from getting too hot. WiFi was turned off before beginning recording as well, and it was the camera alone, no case on it. When I noticed it had shut off I took it down but it was so hot that I couldn't even hold on to it.

While this camera has some awesome points like it's video quality, image stabilization, built in mic, and several other options it's got a lot of downfalls as well. Even still, if you want superior video quality then this is really the camera you should consider because it's image quality and image-stabilization make it an outstanding device I just wish it wasn't lacking is the other areas because then it would truly be the top camera on the market...

UPDATE the firmware: this gives you a FLIP option that allows you to slip the video 180 degrees in the camera so the camera can be mounted upside down and still give you the right perspective/angle of video.

If you like to mount a camera to your motorcycle and don't want to get vibration from the revs of the bike I would highly recommend this for that but remember you will need to adjust the angle of the video by adjusting the angle of the camera as the lens can not rotate to change the angle.

Sony, you have an outstanding start here but please, take some strong notes from the leaders in the market like Drift and others that have so much more function in their cameras for the user to be able to make the adjustments they need to.

While the filter seems to work just fine, I believe they intentionally left out the capacity in its description. If you were comparing this filter with the Maytag UKF8001 Pur Refrigerator Cyst Water Filter 1-Pack it should be noted that the UKF8001 has a capacity of 750 gallons and the Swift Green filter only has a capacity of 300 gallons, so you would go through 2.5 Swift Green filters to equal one PUR filter which makes it 1 2/3 times more expensive to use.

As for me I'm going back to the PUR filters, and if you use the "Subscribe and Save" option through Amazon it comes out to be 1/2 the true cost of the Swift Green filter.

GoPro HERO4 BLACK

GoPro HERO4 BLACK

CUSTOMER REVIEW

I'm a working professional videographer, but no i don't put the same expectations on a camera like the hero4 that i do on my other bigger cameras. Up until now I've been using a hero 3 black for both professional and personal uses. Considering my satisfaction with the hero3, picking up a hero4 was inevitable

**UPDATE: Took off a star for questionable issue: While i haven't come across any major glitches, it does seem to hiccup here and there (my hero3 did the same), the heat that comes off it can be more than warm, but it seems others are experiencing rather hot temperatures. While not entirely reassuring, i've heard some folks have positive experiences dealing with gopro on their overheating matters. We'll have to wait and see, so be sure to buy from a reputable dealer!

What i like about the hero 4 black:

-4K at usable framerates (hero3 could only do 15fps)

-Sweet 120fps slow motion at 1080

-More wireless connectivity(some hiccups, but can work)

-More slowmotion

-Sharpness is satisfactory

-Lowlight is decent enough

-More manual control

What's not to like?

-Battery still not great

-No rear touchscreen

-Doesn't make bacon pancakes

-Doesn't banish ISIS members to the phantom zone(that place jor-el banished general zod to)

New manual controls:

Finally, you can make exposure adjustments! For instance: for night timelapses, you usually want longer exposure times/shutter speed, and you can now do it with this little cam. I need to play with this more to see how well it really performs

No screen:

Many people are very confused as to why the silver edition has it but the black does not. Yea, it's odd and i would have much preferred the flagship get the screen, that being said, i've gotten along very well with my screen-less hero 3, because i have a cautious understanding of the angles it can capture at narrow/medium/wide settings. I'll usually use it as a backup/bonus angle that i don't plan to rely on.That, and it has the phone app in case i need to verify i'm getting the angle i need. The new hero4 has even more connectivity and despite the lack of a screen, as long as you have some digital device with you, it can likely connect and give you a live view.

My bottom line about the screen? You can always add a screen to the black, you cannot add the black features to the silver. The wifi connectivity suits me fine for framing.

Size/weight:

Not much change! That's a good thing, still works with most of all the accessories/etc...

Battery life:

Seems nothing improved over the hero3, still under an hour per charge. Wasabi has a decent extended battery for the hero3, grab that up once they make it for the hero4.

Heat

Possible concern: Can get very warm depending on the settings, and i've seen some users experience very hot temperatures. we'll have to see if this becomes a widespread thing, considering the hero's size, you can't imagine much heat dissipation designed into there. My main concern is the longevity of the device given the heat. heat wears electronics down, reducing their life, if this thing's average temperature is 130degrees, how long will it live? Might be a valid concern, but can't tell without real long testing.

Resolution and Framerates:

Of course the big headline feature is 4k, and that's probably what you're going to buy this thing mainly for. 4k allows for lots of reframing in editing if you're still planning on outputting to 1080. The 4k from the hero4 looks pretty satisfying, maybe not as sharp as bigger/professional cameras, but this is a tiny actioncamera, and i don't see it reasonable to hold it to quite the same standards. for a $500 pocket camera, it's plenty good.

Slow motion keeps getting better on the gopros, there's not much else to say except that you're now getting 1080 at 120fps. Something rare in a camera in this price range, my rx10 which is around a grand can only do 120fps at 720.

Bitrate:

4k gives you up to 60mpbs, which may sound low, but other more expensive cameras use a similar setup and get nice results, and the gopro does pretty well here as well. THe main area where you can see breakup in the codec is fast motion throughout the entire frame, but since all the angles are wide, and many of the details small, the breakup is pretty well controlled. Not perfect, but IMO plenty acceptable for this tiny camera.

Summary, competitors:

If you want 4k in a tiny, rugged camera, the hero4 is on a list of its own. While there are other cameras out there, the overall package gopro has with the hero4 black is impressive, and whether you're a professional or just an enthusiast, it'll get you some nice shots.

Outdoor Fake , Dummy Security Camera with Blinking Light (Silver)

Outdoor Fake , Dummy Security Camera with Blinking Light (Silver)

CUSTOMER REVIEW

I live on a farm, miles from the nearest town and neighbors. My place has been hit a couple of times, quick grab and go scoundrels and not much more. I purchased 6 of these to place around our property and I used lithium batteries, not the cheaper types that you might install in a flashlight.

The lithium batteries power a small red LED light that blinks on and off and give the impression the cameras are "on" and "seeing" what might be in their view. The LEDs have been blinking reliably for a month straight and at night they look VERY real.

I'm impressed with this device because they resemble true cameras that emit an invisible infrared light for night viewing. They have held up well in storms and are easy to adjust and rotate. If someone looks close at the front of the camera, it appears to have built in infrared illuminators. These are the new technology "lights" that provide an invisible light that the eye can not see, but a professional crook might understand and know is the same style of light used on expensive "game cameras" that hunters use to capture images of animals at night.

I'm happy with my purchase and I feel these "fake" cameras do a good job to discourage thieves.

(UPDATE... NOVEMBER 2013. These "cameras" are still working well and in the 2 years since I wrote this review, I have not had any crooks steal anything from me.

Some points...

* Lithium batteries. Sometimes they will run the camera for 3 weeks and sometimes they run 5 weeks. I surmise this might have something to do with cold or hot season.

* Some discussions here stating "no wires" and my thoughts are "no big deal" because WiFi cameras look a lot like this and, cameras placed around by deer hunters have no wires, because the have SD cards that can record video.

Bottom line... in two years, I have not had a failure in anyone of the 6 "cameras" I bought, and the little red blinking LED light is easy to see at night. They have been sitting outside, unprotected and have been rained on, snowed on, have stayed out in the Texas sun (it was 111 degrees here one summer) and they haven't missed a beat.

GoPro HERO4 SILVER

GoPro HERO4 SILVER

CUSTOMER REVIEW

I just purchased the Hero 3+ Black Edition one month ago. When the Hero 4 came out I had to try it and I ended up returning my Hero 3+. Why did I get the Hero 4 Silver over the Hero 4 Black and the Hero 3+ Black?

Three Reasons:

1. The Hero 4 Black is $499 and does not come with an LCD (because of heat issues from 4K they could not put on an LCD).

So really if you bought an LCD BacPac for the Black edition, it would cost you a total of $579 compared to the $399 of the Silver. This is a $180 difference!

2. The two models BOTH have improved sharpness compared to the Hero 3+ Black.

Watch this video to compare the Hero 4 Black to the Hero 3+ Black: http://ift.tt/1qmKBn7

Then watch this video to compare the Hero 4 Black to the Hero 4 Silver: http://ift.tt/1ptz6Lb

As you can see the sharpness between the Hero 4 Black and the Silver is the SAME. They both have the same lens and it's definitely improved over the 3+ Black. Yes, the 4 Black can do 4K at 30 FPS while the 4 Silver can only do 2.7k at 30 FPS (it can do 4K 15 FPS but that is not really usable for most purposes). But to be honest, that is the only improvement and it is a $180 difference! At this moment I cannot justify 4K for that much of an additional increase. I am happy with what the 4 Silver offers AND I get an LCD which is extremely convenient.

3. Compare the battery life of the Hero 4 Black vs the Hero 4 Silver here: http://ift.tt/1CdpBpz

At 2.7k 30 FPS, the Black only lasts 1 hour and 10 minutes while the Silver lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes!! This is the SAME resolution. Why? Because the Black has a more powerful processor to handle the 4K, and this causes it to eat up more battery regardless of the frame rate.

Given these three reasons, I do not believe the Hero 4 Black is worth the cost. But the Hero 4 Silver is definitely a bargain and worthy of an upgrade from the 3+ Black edition. Don't forget in addition to the cost, the Hero 4 Silver has identical specs as the Hero 4 Black (except for 4K). This means you will also get (compared to the 3+ Black):

- 2x the WiFi Speed

- 2x the Dynamic Range for Audio Quality

- Bluetooth Capability

- Night Photo Mode

- Night Time Lapse Mode

- Quick Capture Mode

- Protune for Photos

- Simultaneous Video and Photo

All of these are the same upgrades on the Hero 4, so really you're trading $180 and the LCD screen on the Silver for 4K 30 FPS and decreased battery life on the Black edition. Each person may have their own opinion but I think this is a big problem for most users because the cost does not justify the upgrade.

I haven't had too much of a chance to test it out, but quick photos and videos showed it truly is sharper than the Hero 3+ Black edition. And given the video links I posted above, it is the same sharpness as the Hero 4 Black (unless you shoot in 4K of course). The touch screen is a GREAT addition and very responsive. It works like I would want it to so I am happy with that.

There is one minor bug to mention but it will probably be fixed in an update coming very soon to the firmware. The Night Photo mode should allow control of the shutter speed, but currently a lot of users including myself can only access the shutter speed mode when we turn on Protune. The problem is you should be able to access it outside of Protune since not everyone wants Protune for Night Photo. Hopefully this is fixed quickly with a firmware update but it seems to only be affecting some cameras and not all.

I also recently tested out the battery life with the LCD screen always on. The Hero 4 Silver comes with an auto-off of 1 minute and can be set at either 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, or always on. The LCD brightness can also be set at high, medium, and low.

For scuba diving, you will need the screen always on as you cannot activate it again once it turns off under water (unless you stop recording and record again but that can be annoying). My first test was with the LCD always on, brightness set to high, recording 2.7k 30 FPS. I was able to get 1 hour and 26 minutes out of the battery! That is pretty amazing as I did not expect that with the high brightness setting. I did the test again at 2.7k 30 FPS with brightness set to low and got 1 hour and 32 minutes. So it's up to you how important those 6 minutes are, but for me I'd rather have the full brightness.

Interestingly, I did the test with the LCD off with the same frame rate and got 1 hour and 35 minutes (I did this 3 times with the same result). This means the LCD draws very little power (which is good) but I feel 1 hour and 35 minutes is on the low side of what I should be getting without the LCD given that GoPro claims 1 hour and 50 minutes.

I also tested the Hero 3+ Black in 2.7k 30 and got 1 hour and 38 minutes so the battery life between the two cameras really is the same even though the Hero 4 is 20 mAH less (1180 mAH in the Hero 3+ while 1160 in the Hero 4).

For those curious I also tested the new Battery BacPac (claims 15% increased battery life) and compared it to the older Hero 3+ Battery BacPac. I used the Hero 4 Silver and recorded at 2.7k 30 FPS with LCD off. I got 2 hours and 57 minutes with new Battery BacPac compared with 2 hours and 27 minutes with the older Battery BacPac! So improvement of about 30 minutes is not bad at all! This is more than 15% (it was 35% with my test)! GoPro claims the Hero 4 Silver should get 3 hours with the Battery BacPac with 2.7k 30 FPS so I definitely would consider that result accurate.

Overall a great improvement and hopefully the minor bugs get fixed quickly, but I would highly recommend getting this especially if you are upgrading from an older model like the Hero 2 and Hero 3. If you have the money it is worth the upgrade from the Hero 3+ especially for the LCD, the improved sharpness, night time lapse modes, and audio improvements. I think the double wifi speed and bluetooth connectivity are bonuses but I wouldn't upgrade just for those reasons alone but if you combine all the other benefits it's definitely worth the upgrade!

CUSTOMER REVIEW

I could have spent $15 locally for the same part; the one I received was FPS, which is Whirlpool's replacement parts company. The part had the same numbers on it as the old part.

Stuck it on, and everything is fine. No muss, no fuss, and saved myself $10.

By the way, the drawing on the website is incorrect; the tabs are straight (like my old part), not bent at 90 degrees like the drawing.

And given the video links I posted above, it is the same sharpness as the Hero 4 Black (unless you shoot in 4K of course). The touch screen is a GREAT addition and very responsive. It works like I would want it to so I am happy with that.

There are two minor bugs to mention but they will probably be fixed in an update coming very soon to the firmware.

1. The WiFi connectivity to the app is problematic. Some people have reports of not being able to hold a connection to the app for longer than 3 minutes. I myself could not even get the GoPro to connect at all. This is mostly a software issue so hopefully it is quickly addressed.
